The shooting occurred Saturday just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the Circle A to Z Food Mart at the intersection of South Presa Street and Halliday Avenue.

Police Chief William McManus said plain-clothes officers from the Robbery Task Force were following a brown sedan that had been reported as carjacked at gunpoint Friday.

Three men were inside the car.

McManus said the officers believed Perez Jr. had a gun and was going to rob the store. Police said he did not rob the store. As Perez Jr. left the business he went back inside the car, police said.

The officers said as they went to arrest Perez, he came out of the car with a gun. An officer then opened fire.

"If a suspect pulls a gun on a police officer, if the officer has to do it, he will use deadly force," McManus said.

Perez, who did not fire any shots, was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the San Antonio Police Department Public Information Office, the investigation into the shooting and the carjacking continue.

Police did not release the name of the officer involved in the shooting and only said the officer remains on administrative duty pending an outcome of the investigation.
