Man dies hours after being taken into SAPD custody

Homicide detectives investigating man's death after arrest

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 26-year-old man who passed away after he was arrested Monday evening.

According to the San Antonio Police Department, the man was caught breaking into a car and attempting to steal it on the city's West Side about 5 p.m. Police have not confirmed an exact location.

The owner of the car caught the suspect and held him down until officers arrived. The 26-year-old was taken to the Central Magistrate's Office, where he began having a medical problem.

The man was transported to Downtown Baptist Hospital by ambulance and was pronounced dead at 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to police.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the man’s cause of death.
