MADRID, Spain – National security has become a big business, and a South Texas native has a front-row seat to history as the head of diplomatic security for the ambassador of Spain.
Mark Alcala hails from Del Rio, Texas, and is in Madrid, Spain, until the end of the year leading security.
"Obviously Madrid is a lot different from little Del Rio,” Alcala said. “We've enjoyed it, but we've missed Texas and we're ready to go back."
Before working in diplomatic security Alcala was an officer with the Waco Police Department.
Alcala said he misses the comforts of home.
"Words can't describe how much we miss home. We miss family,” he said. “It's been fun here. It's been an adventure, but we've been here since we were 18, so it's time we head back to Texas and put down some roots."
His dedication has not gone unnoticed.
"Obviously he's a very busy and he's a very important person. We have had to be at the top of our game for his protection,” U.S. Ambassador James Costos said. “He's an incredibly dedicated guy, and we are thrilled that he is a part of our team. And it's great that he is helping us to build upon the already great relationship that exists between Spain and the United States."
