Police: 1 dead in security guard-involved shooting on Northwest Side

Guard shot man after being attacked

SAN ANTONIOUPDATE: The man shot and killed by a security guard at a Northwest Side motel last week has been identified as 35-year-old Jose Feliciano.

ORIGINAL STORY: A 32-year-old man was fatally shot by a security guard at a Northwest Side motel after an argument, police said.

The shooting happened just after 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Fiesta Inn and Suites.

The San Antonio police sergeant at the scene said the security guard fired his gun after he was attacked by the man, who was in the lobby of the motel arguing with his ex-girlfriend.

The man was currently living in the hotel, and his ex-girlfriend was working the front desk. The argument was apparently over a key.

At some point, the man became angry and started kicking out the glass of the front door.

“He started kicking the door, and she told him several times ‘You can't do that. You need to get out of here. You need to leave,’” Sgt. Ethan Humble said. “Then he turned his attention to her. She feared he was going to attack her, so she pulled out the bat and he took it from her. And about that time is when the security guard came out. After he was struck several times with the bat, he pulled out his weapon and fired one time, striking the actor."

The security guard initially used pepper spray to try to get the man to drop the bat, but he wouldn’t stop, police said.

The guard was treated at the scene, but emergency medical services plans on taking him to the hospital because of a large cut on his head.

It is unknown which security company employs the guard.

Humble said all security officers are required to take state-mandated training in order to carry a firearm.

The ex-girlfriend of the man was not harmed.
