SUV crashes into day care center in Cibolo, 7 injured

Crash reported at Choo Choo Xpress Child Care at 750 Schneider Drive

CIBOLO, Texas – A sport utility vehicle crashed into a day care facility Friday in Cibolo, injuring six children and the driver, police said.

Police said an elderly woman driving a Mercedes Benz SUV pulled into a parking spot around 10:45 a.m., and for some reason accelerated instead of braking and crashed into Choo Choo Xpress Child Care at 750 Schneider Drive.

There were 40 children inside the building at the time of the crash, police said.

The children ranged in ages from 5 months old to 18 months old, and Some of them ended up under the SUV, day care manager Kendra Aparicio said.

“When I got the phone call today that there was an accident, I came and wasn't told really anything until I got here,” said Lindsey Whetstone, a parent of one of the children in the room. “My son was found underneath the car, with, I believe, four other of the kids, but he luckily didn't have any scrapes. Nothing was wrong. He was touched by angels.”

A teacher also ended up under the SUV with two babies in her arms, Aparicio said.

"All the babies were playing on the floor of the two classrooms, and we noticed it was a vehicle, and I just saw babies rolling," Aparicio said. "I freaked out. I had three babies in the high chair. I did take them out."

One child was taken to University Hospital in stable condition, police said. Five children were taken to Northeast Baptist Hospital for minor injuries.

The driver was transported to Northeast Methodist Hospital for evaluation, police said.

The remaining children were released to relatives, police said.

Aparicio said employees of the daycare will clean up this weekend with hopes of opening back up on Monday.

“From what we've heard, people have been trying to pay extra weeks in advance to help get our daycare back together,” Whetstone said. “It's an amazing feeling that I live in a community that's so willing to help.”
