Police: Man charged in death of 10-year-old girl on Northwest Side

Paul Anthony Bateman, 32, has been taken into custody

SAN ANTONIO – A local man has been charged in the death of a 10-year-old girl on the city's Northwest Side, San Antonio police said Tuesday.

Paul Anthony Bateman, 32, has been taken into police custody and is charged with murder.

According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office, 10-year-old Reanne Olivarez died on Monday afternoon. The exact circumstances surrounding her death are not currently known.

Officers originally responded to an injured/sick person call at the Ashler Oaks Apartments in the 4100 block of Parkdale Street around 3 p.m. Monday. Emergency crews found Olivarez with blunt force trauma to the head and chest and pronounced Olivarez dead at the scene.

A preliminary police report said Bateman failed to call police and instead called someone else to the apartment and that person called for help.

Police said Olivarez' mother and common-law stepfather were working when Reanne and a 1-year-old were left with Bateman. The 1-year-old was not hurt.

Police said Bateman refused to talk about the circumstances regarding the girl's death.

Court records show that Bateman has had a number of previous arrests, including at least one for a violent crime.

Bateman was arrested in 2005 on a charge of injury to the elderly and records say he was declared insane and spent close to a decade at a state hospital in Vernon. He was released in 2016.

Bateman's bond has been set at $200,000. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
