Ex-law enforcement officer arrested in suspected drunken driving, head-on crash

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – An ex-law enforcement officer is facing an intoxication assault charge following a head-on collision that sent a 43-year-old woman to a hospital in critical condition late Saturday night.

New Braunfels police said 66-year-old Charles Motz was driving his Chevrolet pickup in the wrong direction near Loop 337 around 11 p.m. when he hit a Mazda head-on, seriously injuring the 43-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Mazda.

Authorities said the woman was flown to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities have not provided an update on the woman's condition.

Police said Motz was found to be intoxicated and was taken into custody by the Comal County Sheriff's Office on a charge of intoxication assault, a third-degree felony.

Records from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement show Motz was employed by the Kendall County Sheriff's Office for a total of 7 1/2 years. Between 2001 and 2011, he served as a reserve officer, jailer and peace officer for the Kendall County Sheriff's Office, TCOLE records show.
