3 hurt, more than 16 shots fired in drive-by outside Hayes Food Mart

Possibly connected to early Sunday morning shooting in Sunrise, police say

SAN ANTONIO – Three people were shot outside the Hayes Food Mart when someone drove by firing more than 16 shots Sunday morning, police said

San Antonio police received multiple calls for shots fired near the intersection of Hayes Street and New Braunfels Avenue around 7 a.m.

According to police, two men in a dark sedan drove past the convenience store and shot three people outside. Two of them were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. The third victim was grazed by a bullet.

Police said the description in this shooting matches that of an earlier shooting in the 4000 block of Sunrise Creek. Police are investigating whether the two shootings are connected.

East side resident Morris Stephens' car was shot during the drive-by. Stephens grew up on the east side and said Sundays shooting was the last straw.

"I'm just looking at my car -- my wife could have been in that car, my son could have been in that car, it's just ridiculous that's all," Stephens said.

Stephens was getting gas at Hayes Food Mart on Sunday when his car was shot at.

He said his son usually sits in the left backseat and his wife drives -- the two areas sprayed with gunfire. He said the neighborhood has changed and he blames the younger generation.

"They're idiots and they just shoot, they don't care who they're shooting at," Stephens said. "They don't even know how to shoot, they haven't been to no classes, so they just pick up a gun and shoot."

Stephens said the police are doing all they can to help solve the problem, but there's only one option left for him and his family.

"I'm gonna move, I'm gonna move, I can't handle this," Stephens said.
