SAN ANTONIOUPDATE: KSAT 12 viewers have helped solve the mystery of the dog's tattoo. The dog is from Belgium, according to online records. Read that report here.

Animal Care Services is asking the public for help identifying a mysterious tattoo on a Belgian Malinois rescued during an animal cruelty investigation last week.

The dog, named Lady, was "severely emaciated" when she was found at a home on Espinoza Street last week.

ACS employees said in addition to being malnourished and suffering from extensive hair loss, she had a distinct tattoo on her right ear that appears to read: B-H-K-E-D-E.

ACS said because Malinois are often used as military or police dogs, investigators have been searching for records of previous training or deployment. They said all searches through Lackland Air Force Base, TSA and the National Dog Registry's tattoo database have resulted in dead ends.

Those with information on the dog's background are asked to call 311.
