CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Padre Island National Seashore asks that visitors leave sea turtles alone while they’re nesting, and avoid shining lights on the turtles which might frighten them and cause them to abandon their nests.

Sea turtles are making a comeback along the Texas coastline, especially at Padre Island National Seashore, in response to effective conservation efforts by federal, state and local communities.

Loggerhead and Green sea turtle nests are increasing exponentially at Padre Island National Seashore, and their nesting season lasts through mid-September.

Some of these turtles may weigh 300 pounds or more, which means they move slowly and can’t move fast enough to avoid approaching vehicles.

Hitting these turtles with a vehicle could cause harm to the turtle, as well as the driver of the vehicle, making it even more important to adhere to speed limits.

Nesting females come ashore almost exclusively at night and may be on the beach for 2 hours or more.
