Garcia and Lopez were at the courthouse Thursday morning, where they spoke about their concepts and what they want people to take away when they see the works of art they will create.

"I included a statue of St. Anthony because he's the patron saint of San Antonio," Lopez said.

"I would like them to walk away knowing a little bit more about themselves, as well as their environment, and a little bit of mysticism too," Garcia said. "I would like them to walk away with hope and excitement for the future."

The murals kick off the first phase of the $175 million San Pedro Creek Improvements project that will run from the tunnel inlet near the Christopher Columbus Italian Society over to Houston Street.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in time for next year's Tricentennial celebration.
