BCSO: Ex-deputy accused of sexually assaulting 4-year-old commits suicide in jail

Jose Nunez died from an apparent suicide Monday afternoon

KARNES CITY, Texas – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate who was being held at the Karnes County Detention Center died Monday evening.

According to a press release, inmate Jose Nunez, 47, died from an apparent suicide. He was pronounced dead around 5:45 p.m.

Nunez, a former Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy who was assigned to a detention facility, had been in the Karnes County Jail since June 17 after being charged with the sexual assault of a child.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Nunez is a 10 year veteran of BCSO. Investigators believe Nunez sexually assaulted a 4-year-old over a period of time.

"We know that it's been going on for several months," Salazar said. "We are not ruling out the fact that it could have been going back several years."

Salazar said the victim's mother is an undocumented immigrant and Nunez used that advantage to keep the mother from reporting the crime.

The Karnes County Sheriff's Office will now conduct an investigation into the death. The Texas Rangers also have been notified as is standard protocol.
