SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police identify the 29-year-old suspect who was shot and the officers who pulled the trigger in a West Side shooting last week.
The police department said Michael Angel Roque, 29, allegedly pointed a shotgun covered by a duffle bag at nine officers and a sergeant outside a bar on Sept. 25.
All 10 officers pulled their triggers, striking the suspect, SAPD said.
At this point, court records show Roque has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer, which is considered a first-degree felony.
He has been in the hospital for at least three days and is expected to be OK, according to SAPD.
The preliminary report said the 10 police officers were placed on administrative leave until further notice, a common practice after police shootings.
SAPD identified the shooting officers as:

- Officer J. Munoz #1726, 8 years of service
- Sgt. Solchenberger #3247, 10 years of service
SAPD said two units within the department are handling separate investigations involving the shooting before information is sent to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.
Background
Police responded to the 500 block of Ruiz Street after an armed man was reported before 8 p.m. near a convenience store. The preliminary report said the suspect, identified as Roque by SAPD, moved toward the Kozy Korner Saloon parking lot where their encounter unfolded.
The preliminary report states police were made aware of a shotgun inside a duffle bag, and an officer tried to negotiate with him for several minutes.
Police Chief Jesse Salame said police fired “less-lethal beanbag” rounds to try and have Roque put the gun down and surrender.
Police saw Roque move between nearby vehicles and allegedly rack a shotgun. SAPD said he pointed the weapon at officers.
Those 10 police officers shot at Roque and critically injured him, the department said. It is unclear how many bullets struck Roque.
First responders treated Roque’s injuries before he was taken to a local hospital. SAPD said he is recovering and is “expected to survive.”
Several witnesses saw police shoot at Roque and gave statements to SAPD.
No injuries to officers or bystanders were reported.
Witnesses and people in the area told KSAT the man who was shot Friday night had stabbed a woman earlier this week.
The woman who was injured in the earlier stabbing spoke to KSAT, saying the man told officers to “put your guns down or you’re going to kill me.”
In March, Roque told KSAT he was pushed and beaten by security guards at Burnhouse Bar last year. Roque said he has impaired vision and didn’t know what he did wrong to be kicked out of the popular Northwest Side bar.
“I was scared for my life. I didn’t know what I had did wrong,” said Roque, who was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa as a toddler.
