Stevens HS graduate, basketball co-captain killed in West Texas rollover crash, DPS says

SCURRY COUNTY, Texas – The Stevens High School community is mourning after a former student-athlete was killed in a rollover crash last week in West Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 84 at Farm-to-Market Road 1606, located west of Abilene, Texas.

According to a preliminary report, the driver was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 84 at a “high rate of speed” in the passing lane. At some point, the driver lost control of the vehicle, drove off the roadway and rolled over. He was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver, later identified as Bakari James DiAngelo Brown, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene, DPS said.

In a Facebook post, the Stevens Falcons Boys Basketball group shared a remembrance post for Brown.

They wrote he was a 2025-2026 basketball co-captain, an all-district selection and a valued contributor to the team for four years.
