SAN ANTONIO – The 84-year-old man trapped in his home after a stolen SUV went slamming into it last month has died.
On the morning of Dec. 12, Jack Weatherford was sleeping in the house he'd been living in for more than five decades when the SUV driven by an unknown suspect crashed through the wall into his bedroom.
Weatherford was discovered by a security guard working at a nearby church the day of the crash, and his family said they remain grateful for the man's efforts.
The homeowner was taken to a local hospital initially as a precaution, but was later moved to a rehab facility where he fell ill to pneumonia. He was taken back to the hospital before being placed in hospice, where he died Friday.
"Obviously, we miss him," said Chuck Cervantes, Weatherford's son-in-law. "We didn't have a Christmas or New Year's. We were tending to him. Of course, he passed on and so there was no holidays this year."
As loved ones currently fix up the longtime family home so they can put it on the market, they are still waiting for police to find the person responsible for the crash.
"They need help. If somebody knows who this person is, they need to convince them to come forward," Cervantes said.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled Weatherford's death accidental.
A spokeswoman with the San Antonio Police Department said they have no suspects in the case at this time, and if caught, the person will face failure to stop and render aid charges.
