New mural at Stinson celebrates women's achievement in aviation

Project part of World Heritage site

SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio celebrated Wednesday the completion of a World Heritage public art project at Stinson Municipal Airport.

It's a mural with a message.

The mural celebrates the achievements by women in aviation.

It was created by a team of local professional artists and historians led by the director of the World Heritage Office.

"It shows the past, but also the present and looking forward to the future,” Colleen Swain said. “Hopefully young woman when they drive by here will be inspired by this mural."

The mural hangs outside hangar three.

It is also the first of 10 murals in the World Heritage public art project.

"When we talk about World Heritage, it's about learning from our history but also looking towards the future,” Swain said. “So this mural shows that.”

The other art projects will be placed in key areas along the San Antonio Missions World Heritage trail route and reflect the rich history, culture of the missions and the people and neighborhoods within the area.
