Taylor, Nirenberg headed to runoff in race for mayor

Runoff election scheduled for June 10

SAN ANTONIO – The race for mayor was the highlight election of the night, with top contenders incumbent Ivy Taylor and Ron Nirenberg heading to a runoff.

A total of 13 candidates were on the ballot for the mayoral election.

During her address to supporters, Taylor criticized Nirenberg's campaign.

"We fought hard in this election. We fended off our share of falsehoods and half-truths, but we stayed positive and focused on San Antonio's future. When the message is opportunity of all San Antonians, regardless of which neighborhood they live in, you don't need to go low," Taylor said.

Nirenberg told his supporters the work has just begun to make San Antonio even better.

“If we want to build that city, if we want to bring that strong leadership into the city, know that today was a milestone. It was an indication that San Antonio wants change. We want bold leadership. We want a community that is proud of itself and is treated with respect, no matter where you are. And that is the city that we are going to deliver with you.” Nirenberg said.

Candidate Manuel Medina addressed his supporters, saying, “Elected officials in this race and beyond this race are going to have to address the issues that we talked about today, which is independent leadership at City Hall focused on today and cost effective government.”

He also thanked his supporters and volunteers for a great campaign.

“Let’s hear it for all the volunteers because I know you were the most committed, most enthusiastic and most excited,” Medina said.

The runoff election is scheduled for Saturday, June 10. Early voting runs from May 30-June 6.
