Nirenberg works jackhammer on first day as mayor

New mayor, council sworn into office Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO – Ron Nirenberg was sworn into office Wednesday as the new mayor of San Antonio.

Nirenberg, who defeated incumbent Ivy Taylor in a runoff election earlier this month, didn't waste time showing residents he means business about his public priorities.

Prior to the swearing-in ceremony, Nirenberg joined a city crew that was filling potholes on the city's near West Side and worked a jackhammer.

Nirenberg said while Wednesday was his first official day on the job, he started getting ready for his two-year mayoral term two weeks ago.

"The city has been through a number of transitions. What they want to make sure is that their basics are taken care of, that the transition is a smooth one for our citizens and that we turn the page and begin working on that big vision that San Antonio citizens really, resoundingly said yes to during the election," he said.

Nirenberg said that despite some uncomfortable moments between him and Taylor since the runoff election, the two have exchanged messages.

He said his camp wanted to express their appreciation for Taylor's mayoral service.

Nirenberg said that a mayor's work doesn't begin at Genesis, and there are projects that need to be continued.

Following the canvassing of the runoff election results, the new City Council members for Districts 2, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 were also sworn into office.

The official inauguration ceremony for Nirenberg and all city council members will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Arneson River Theatre.
