Texas State mom goes viral after making unlikely new friends at daughter's orientation

Mom tells daughter "I made some friends. Don't wait up!"

SAN MARCOS, Texas – A text with photos of a mom hanging out with some Texas State football players during her daughter’s college orientation has gone viral.

Avery Foster posted the photo on Twitter and it has gotten more than 89,000 retweets and 407,000 likes as of Wednesday morning.

Foster's tweet read, “My mom dropped me off today for College freshman orientation and she sends me this…”

Her mom’s text response jokingly read, “I made some friends. Don’t wait up!”

The tweet included pictures of her mom spending the day with the members of the Bobcats football team.

The tweet was shown on ABC's "Good Morning America" and even ESPN's "Sportscenter."

This mom and incoming Texas State student have apparently won the internet for the week.

Turns out, the photos were all part of a scholarship contest. According to Foster, parents were allowed to eat on the football field while students attended orientation. During dinner, it was announced whoever took a "silly selfie" and posted it to the university's account would be entered into the running for a $500 scholarship for their student.

"A lot of people were trying to hide that they were taking selfies with the football players in the background," Foster said. "My mom decided she wasn't going to hide trying to take a picture, so she went straight up to the football players and asked for pictures."

Foster said it was the players' idea to take action shots. Nonetheless, the exchange gave Twitter users a good laugh.
