It's back to school for San Antonio's largest school districts

NEISD, NISD start classes on Monday

SAN ANTONIO – It's back to school for teachers and students alike as San Antonio's two largest school districts begin class on Monday.

Both the North East Independent School District and the Northside Independent School District are beginning their 2017-18 school year.

NEISD is the second largest school District in San Antonio with a student population of approximately 67,000 students.

Parents, students, and teachers alike all are expecting a good year this year.

Northside ISD, the city's largest school district, is opening both a new high school and a new elementary school in 2017.

The brand-new Harlan High School is a 486,000-square-foot facility and is Northside's 11th comprehensive high school. Although this year the school will open to about 1,400 students, principal Robert Harris said he anticipates it will be at its capacity of 3,000 very soon.

Priscilla Williams, head counselor at Harlan, said that she's excited for the first day.

"We're excited to meet all the students and families of Harlan High School," Williams said. "We can't wait until the first day of school. We're busy and getting everything ready to make sure everything is ready and smooth for all the students that come through our doors."

Kallison Elementary, located just outside Loop 1604 and Culebra Road, is the 78th elementary to join the district.

Principal Billy Navin said it wasn't that long ago that he and the teachers were finally able to work inside the building.

"The main part of the summer was spent in a portable — planning, hiring, just trying to create the best school possible,” he said.

All San Antonio schools will be open on Monday despite the chance for wet weather, Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in a press conference Sunday afternoon.
