3-year-old boy writes letter to Santa in braille

Teacher helps student with Christmas list

SCHERTZ, Texas – Kids everywhere are looking forward to a special visitor from the North Pole in just a few days.
Many children will reach out to Santa by writing a letter.

But one boy is sending his request in a unique way. His letter to St. Nick is in braille and he is anxiously waiting for a response.

Atticus Diggs, 3, is a student at Schertz Elementary School.

Diggs has septo optic dysplasia, which causes blindness and other medical issues, but his mother said that doesn’t slow him down.

"He's got adrenal insufficiency, which means his immune system is weak,” Ashley Diggs said. We've been hospitalized, but he is a tough cookie.

With the help of the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District's Special Education Department the child is already writing braille notes to his mom.

So with Christmas around the corner he asked his teacher, Erika Garcia, if he could write a letter to Santa.

"He kind of hesitated for a moment,” Garcia said. “He said ‘Can Santa read Braille?’” After the chills went down, I finally said, "Yes, he does,’" and we just went ahead and wrote it."

Garcia helped Atticus craft a letter to Santa using a brailer.

"Dear Santa” he began, “I'm so excited about Christmas."

Tops on his list, a Nintendo Mario Kart.

“He's memorized the sounds of each level, so, he knows when to jump,” Ashley Diggs said. “He's a little prodigy. So Nintendo and an air compressor and he also said ‘Surprise me.’"

Thanks to the elves at the North Pole, KSAT has confirmed Atticus will get a braille letter from Santa very soon.
