Our favorite tunes to hear on long car trips

SAN ANTONIO – Here's a little secret about the KSAT-12 Newsroom: it's quite musical. We don't all like the same music, but we REALLY like music. I have surveyed our staff to find out which non-holiday songs they say are a must on a road trip.

  • Sam Bayless, Editor: David Bowie - "Oh You Pretty Things" & Merle Haggard - "Mama Tried"
  • Bernice Bonner, Executive Producer: Madonna - "Holiday"
  • Steve Browne, Chief Meteorologist & Greg Simmons, Sports Director: Willie Nelson - "On The Road Again"
  • Van Darden, KSAT.com Editor: Paul Simon - "Graceland" & The Rolling Stones - "You Can't Always Get What You Want." Van said he was on a trip with his dad and when The Stones' song came on "my dad pulled over and said it was important that I have a complete understanding of this song."
  • Rey Elizardo, Photojournalist: Creedence Clearwater Revival - "The Midnight Special"
  • Tim Gerber, Reporter: Supertramp - "Take The Long Way Home." Tim said, "I remember hearing this song on road trips when I was a kid. When I hear it now, it takes me right back to the back seat of my parents' car and it reminds me that sometimes the long way home is often way more interesting than the shortcut."
  • Eileen Gonzales, Reporter: George Harrison - "Give Me Love"
  • Ivette Gray, Editor: Creedence Clearwater Revival - "Fortunate Son"
  • Mike Hartman, Editor: America - "Ventura Highway"
  • Jenna Hiller, Reporter: Pat Green - "Southbound 35." Jenna said she used to take I-35 from Mizzou to Austin. "That song always represented my road trips home to see my family and my boyfriend (now husband). I learned the hard way that it was easier to drive home for Thanksgiving when I spent an entire Thanksgiving Day at the Chicago O'Hare airport due to flight delays. After that, I always drove home for the holidays - about 12 hours each way."
  • Justin Horne, Reporter/Meteorologist: Whitesnake - "Here I Go Again"
  • Ursula Pari, Anchor: Led Zepellin - "Stairway To Heaven"
  • Mario Orellana, Executive Producer: Golden Earring - "Radar Love"
  • Steve Spriester, Anchor: Paul McCartney & Wings - "Band on The Run"
  • Tim Stewart, Photojournalist: The Proclaimers - "(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles." Tim said it "reminds me of the glory days of college road trippin'."
  • Sean Talbot, Producer: Lindsey Buckingham - "Holiday Road"
  • Diana Winters, Producer: The Police - "Roxanne"

KSAT-12 Producer Julie Gill (who is actually a human jukebox) refused to commit to a song or two. She said, ""When I make road trip mixes, I put lots of upbeat, fun songs. I also love any songs where you can sing harmony like Simon and Garfunkel or new duo, The Belle Brigade. OH .. and probably some GLEE songs."

As for yours truly, I chose The Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight." It's about 15 minutes long, upbeat and (I just realized this) kind of qualifies as a Thanksgiving song because it talks about food.

If you don't like our songs, these compilations might give you some ideas for your road trip playlist.
