Plumbers stay busy during Thanksgiving

Grease, potato skins can clog pipes

SAN ANTONIO – Dumping un-eaten Thanksgiving food down the garbage disposal my lead to a visit from the plumber.

"It's a busy time, we get a lot of calls," said Jesse Alberio, a plumber for Aramendia Plumbing. "Everybody thinks they can put everything down the drain and you can't."

This Thanksgiving, after the turkey is gone and the casserole is devoured, you might want to think twice about washing what is leftover on your plate down the garbage disposal.

Otherwise, a call to the plumber may be in your future.

"You might not get stuck-up on Thanksgiving, but down the line, the grease builds and makes a big clog and you will have to call us up," said Alberio.

Potato skins are notorious for causing clogs and can act like glue in your pipes. Consider throwing potato peels along with other scraps into the trash.

"No potato skins, no pasta, rice; that all rises," said Alberio.

Grease from foods like turkey also causes problems if dumped down the sink.  It can cause a build-up not only in your pipes, but down the line too. According to SAWS, grease build-up is one of the biggest causes of sewer spills in San Antonio.

"The easiest thing to do is to put that grease, scrape it off your plates and dishes, in the trashcan before you rinse them off," said Sarah Gatewood, with San Antonio Water Systems.

If you have large quantities of grease, the city also offers disposal sites.
