Man shot outside NW Side nightclub

23-year-old in critical condition after shooting at Joe's Volcano

SAN ANTONIO – A 23-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot outside a Northwest Side nightclub early Monday morning.

Police said shots were fired around 2 a.m. as a large crowd was leaving Joe's Volcano, at 6844 Ingram Road.

Witnesses said the victim was standing near a car when he was hit under the armpit. Police said there had been a fight in the parking lot before the shooting.

Detectives questioned several people who were among the crowd.

The shooting is not the first time there has been a problem at the club. Police have been called to Joe's Volcano more than 60 times in the last year for things like assault, rape, fights and criminal mischief.

Moriah Collins and Racquel Hargrove visit the club about once a week and describe it as packed and fun.

"Everybody gets kind of crazy. A lot of the guys, they're always fighting over females. It's really stupid," Collins said.

She said that while fights are not a surprise, the shooting is.

"There's always drama there, but I don't surround myself around that, so I'm not too much worried about it. But just to know there's a shooting now, I guess I'll have to watch out where I go," she said.

Hargrove said that the club could use more security, but that just like with Monday morning's shooting, problems usually happen out in the parking lot, not in the club itself.

"When we leave there's always cops outside, regardless of whether someone called them or not," she said.
