Bus driver resigns after incident

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio school bus driver has resigned two days after leaving a 4-year-old boy alone on a bus.

On Monday morning, when the 4-year-old should have been inside the Higgs Carter King Charter Academy to have breakfast, he was sleeping alone on a bus for what could have been ninety minutes or more.

His parents, Cory and Kendra Luna, who do not want the boy identified, are concerned about what could have happened had the boy woken up.

"I know for a fact he would have taken off and went running and somebody could have picked him up or hit him," said Kendra Luna. "I think we should press charges on her."

Her husband agreed.

"Somebody could have picked him up, he could have been hit by a car, if this would have been three months later in the summertime he probably wouldn't be alive due to the heat," Cory Luna said.

They say the school was late telling them about the incident and failed to investigate it and take action quickly.

Higgs Carter King Administrator Daniel Martinez said the school did take this incident seriously and acted quickly. Martinez said the school bus driver accused of leaving the child alone has also been dealt with.

"The bus driver is no longer with us," Martinez said. "She did resign."

Martinez said the resignation was not under pressure but that this incident would have resulted in discipline.

"There would have been some discipline in order," Martinez said. There sure would have."

The parents hope incidents such as this will not happen again but have still filed reports with San Antonio Police and Child Protective Services.

Despite the bus driver resigning, the Lunas do not plan to send their kids back to Higgs Carter King until another meeting with the school, possibly with a lawyer.
