The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force announced the formal extradition of a man wanted in connection with a fatal stabbing in Comal County in 2004.
Seven years after becoming a fugitive, Lee Roy Suarez was escorted from Mexico City to San Antonio where he was handed over to the Comal County Sheriff's Department on Thursday.
Suarez was wanted for the homicide of Diego Saenz and aggravated assault of his brother, Vicente Saenz.
A U.S. Marshals press release stated Suarez and two friends got into a fight with the Saenz brothers that escalated into the fatal stabbing.
Authorities say Vicente was able to identify Suarez and the other two men involved.
Those men were arrested and sentenced to prison while Suarez fled to Mexico, the release stated.
The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force along with Mexican authorities were able to track Suarez to Neuvo Leon, Mexico.
The release stated Suarez assumed another identity, was arrested at least once by Mexico authorities but released after his true identity was masked by several aliases.
In October 2011, information developed by U.S. authorities was passed to Mexican federal agents who were able to locate and apprehend Suarez in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, the release stated.
After his arrest, Suarez was transported to Mexico City where he was held in a federal penitentiary pending the formal extradition process.
Suarez waived his extradition hearing which allowed for him to be extradited back to the United States.
Suarez is currently in the custody of the Comal County Sheriff's Department pending trial for his alleged role in the murder, the release stated.
