Alarm alerts family to fire

Candle too close to mattress to blame for fire on Karen Lane

SAN ANTONIO – A woman suffered second-degree burns to her face and scalp after a fire erupted in her bedroom early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the a home in the 800 block of Karen Lane on the northeast side around 2:40 a.m.

The woman's son said he woke up to the sound of the smoke detector and went to find his mother. He said she was in her bathroom trying to put out the flames on her body.

"She just had her hair done and all the chemicals in her hair, and it just burned her hair off," Steven Scales said.

He said his mother struck a match and the spark caught her night gown and comforter on fire. It then spread to her mattress, which quickly went up in flames.

"She panicked. She didn't call for me. She panicked. And she went in there and drenched herself," Scales said. "So I got some water and tried to put it out, and once it got inside the mattress it just flamed up, so I just grabbed her and carried her out."

Scales said he left the house with the only thing that really matters -- his mother -- and left the fire to the professionals.

"Once I seen her, I was good. I didn't worry about anything else. The house can burn down as long as she was alright.," he said.

Paramedics took the woman to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment.
