Box with uncounted ballots from March primary found

Counting of discovered ballots for Atascosa County scheduled for Tuesday morning

The results of an Atascosa County race, which is currently in a runoff, are in question after a box of uncounted ballots was found.

According to information discussed during Monday morning's Atascosa County Commissioners' Court meeting, this count involves about 500 votes.

City officials said these uncounted ballots are allegedly early voting ballots and affect Democratic and Republican primaries, and potentially impacting some races.

Results affected may include the Democratic runoff for District Judge of the 218th Judicial District between Carrie Moy and Sylvia Rodriguez, with only 179 votes separating Rodriguez from Moy.

Former Pearsall mayor Roland Segovia said those working with Rodriguez were told a few days ago 139 votes were "found." Segovia said as of Monday, the elections office is saying the number now stands at 539 ballots.

Segovia said the ballots already have been canvassed and that the outcome could mean Moy will win outright without a runoff.

Atascosa County Democratic Chair Rosa Elkins released this statement Monday evening: "As the Democratic County Chair, it is a mystery to me that early voting ballots were not counted on election night. In Atascosa County, early voting ballots are always counted first before the ballots voted on Election Day. Every race on the Democratic ballot can be affected. Especially the 218th District Judge Race scheduled for a runoff in May."

The counting of those ballots is scheduled for Tuesday morning at the Atascosa County Election Administrator's Office at 915 Main St. in Jourdanton.
