Gilbert Rico, 33, has been charged in the murder of Roxanne Diaz, who was found the morning of April 7, 2008 in a field on the 3400 block of Magic Drive.
Diaz's clothes were found near her body. Her throat had been slashed and her hands and genitalia had been cut.
"I close my eyes and I see the way he left her," said Diaz's aunt, Margaret Martinez.
New DNA evidence led to the charges against Rico, who was already serving a sentence for another crime. He is now in the Bexar County Jail.
"I want to look at his face and ask him why, why did he mutilate her," said Martinez. "Why did he cut her head off? Why did he do that to her?"
The victim's family says they do not know Rico and are unsure whether Diaz had any connection to him.
"I do believe that there's more to this story," said Christina Cruz, Diaz's sister-in-law. "And I hope we get more pieces of the puzzle, of course. As of now, I am just relieved that we found one."
The 24-year-old victim left behind two children, who were 3 and 6 years old at the time of her murder.
Martinez and Cruz are now bracing for a legal battle that they hope will reveal the truth and justice.
"I want the death penalty," said Martinez. "I want him to die for what he did."
