Police: Man confesses to stealing copper nearly 80 times

Jesus Rojas , 34, charged with stealing copper wiring

SAN ANTONIO – A South Side man has been arrested in connection with the theft of copper wiring.

According to an arrest affidavit, 34-year-old Jesus Rojas, confessed to stealing copper wiring about 80 times, cutting it right off of utility poles all around the city.

Police said it was after a theft last month that they got a clue leading them to Rojas.

According to the affidavit, a homeowner saw a man cutting copper ground wiring from a CPS Energy pole.

Police said the witness gave them a license plate number and they traced the car to Rojas.

Investigators say they also found online records showing that Rojas sold some of the stolen copper to scrap yards, the affidavit stated.

Detectives interviewed Rojas and he confessed to the crimes and said he had his 13-year-old son with him during some of those thefts.

Police also were looking at a woman as a possible second suspect.

But both she and Rojas denied that she had involvement with the thefts and she had not been arrested as of Wednesday morning.
