Couple arrested in baseball bat beating death

Daniel Moreno Lopez, 28, Candie Dominguez, 35 charged with murder

SAN ANTONIO – Two people have been arrested in connection with the brutal death of a man at a near North Side home, San Antonio police said.

Candie Dominguez, 35, is accused of taking part in the baseball bat beating death of the victim while her three children were inside the home.

She was arrested late Monday along with Daniel Moreno Lopez, 28. Both are charged with murdering Jose Luis Menchaca, 28.

An arrest warrant affidavit stated that a relative of Menchaca reported him missing after hearing about the beating from a witness who also was inside the house at the time of the murder.

The affidavit stated that the witness said the two suspects had been arguing with Menchaca on Sept. 30 at a home in the 400 block of Hillwood Drive near Basse and Blanco roads.

The man said at one point, Dominguez instructed him to take her three children into another room, the affidavit stated.

Both he and the children told investigators they later heard Menchaca screaming for help and saw blood in Dominguez's bedroom, the affidavit stated.

Police said the victim was beaten with a baseball bat.

They said the witness also told Menchaca's relative that he saw the couple place Menchaca's badly beaten body into a Chevrolet Suburban, the affidavit stated.

Investigators searched the home on Monday and found a man's remains in the garage.

The affidavit stated although the remains have not been identified yet, police believe it is Menchaca's body.

Dominguez and Lopez were taken into custody late Monday. As he was being led away in handcuffs, Lopez struggled with police and cursed at news crews who were taking his picture.
