SAN ANTONIO – Two people died Monday afternoon in a head-on collision in the 16400 block of Vance Jackson Road.
The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m.
The driver of a black Pontiac G8 was traveling southbound on Vance Jackson when the driver crossed the median and entered the northbound lanes.
The car then went completely off the road and back into northbound traffic before it struck a silver Mercedes SUV head-on, police said.
"We're going to have to wait on some of the toxicology reports from the ME to try and find out (if there was) anything in the driver's system to make him suddenly start driving erratically like this," said San Antonio police Officer Doug Greene.
The driver of the black Pontiac was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person inside the car and not wearing a seat belt, police said.
The SUV was carrying four people, including two girls ages 4 and 7. The mother of the two girls, who was riding in the passenger's seat of the SUV, also died at the scene.
Both of the girls and their father, the SUV's driver, were transported to University Hospital in critical but stable condition.
"This is a very tragic situation where we have more questions than answers," Greene said. "We don't know where they were coming from or so forth, but they were driving in the correct lane, and unfortunately were at the wrong location at the wrong time."
Police investigators said there were no obvious indicators at the scene of the crash that alcohol was involved, but they were not ruling it out.
"Usually when you go to some of these scenes, you can smell alcohol. You can see evidence of open containers and so forth, and that wasn't the case," Greene said.
Officers initially suspected a medical episode might have caused the crash. Police are still looking into that as well.
The names of the victims had not been released as of noon Tuesday.
