SAN ANTONIO – Tesla Motors turned down San Antonio as the site for their new battery factory, but now it's looking to build a showroom here.
The automaker giant asked the city Tuesday to rezone 5 acres of land in the 2100 block of East Sonterra Boulevard to build a new showroom.
Under state law, the electric car company is unauthorized to sell vehicles because it has no franchise agreement with any dealership.
Showrooms do however, exist in Austin and Houston. Officials said they just want to give San Antonio residents a chance to look at the vehicles too.
However, it really is just a showroom. You can't buy the cars, test drive them or really do much more than look at it.
Tesla is working with state senator and state representative to change the law, and is it passes, showrooms currently in place could be converted into dealerships.
The request must be approved by the city's planning commission before going to the City Council for a final vote.
