Woman celebrates birthday by paying it forward

Irene Talamantez asks friends, family to give to homeless

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio woman spent her birthday paying it forward to the city's homeless population this Valentine's Day.

Instead of presents or a party, Irene Talamantez asked her friends and family to donate items to those in need.

"I was just wondering, 'What do I need?' And I don't really need anything," Talamantez said.

Truckloads of food, water and toiletries were donated and driven downtown by volunteers.

Word of the effort spread fast throughĀ the Paying It Forward San Antonio Facebook page.

"To give love, to give God's love, it's just an amazing thing to go out and love on others when they least expect it," volunteer Annetta Short said.

The group of volunteers walked up and down city streets handing out supplies.

"I don't have a mansion. I mean, there are lots of things that need to be done in our home, but we have a home. These people don't have anything," Talamantez said.

"With what we're doing today, even if we affect one person, it's going to make a big difference. It's all about love," volunteer Annette Wilson said.

Talamantez said she hopes her message of love on Valentine's Day will inspire others to pay it forward on their birthdays.
