Texas Game Wardens involved in big drug bust

Suspected smugglers use boat to haul drugs from Mexico

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – Texas game wardens and officers from other agencies scored a big drug bust on a popular beach at South Padre Island early Thursday.

The game wardens received information about 4:30 a.m. that a boat from Mexico had landed near the hotel zone on South Padre, and smugglers were moving the drugs to a waiting vehicle.

A team responded, along with members of the Coast Guard and Homeland Security. They said they found a truck backed up to the water and a boat anchored and unloading bundles of marijuana.

When the suspected smugglers saw law enforcement officers, the boat took off toward Mexico and was then tracked by U.S. Customs and Border Protection until the launch capsized.

Five suspects were pulled from the Gulf of Mexico and taken into custody. Officers also arrested one suspect with the truck and seized 17 bundles of marijuana. They seized more bundles from the capsized boat.

In all, the recovered drugs totaled 730 pounds.

Officers from South Padre Island and Cameron County Park Police assisted with the apprehension and drug seizure.
