BOSTON – A photo of a retired United States Marine with a prosthetic leg crossing the finish line while holding the American flag at Monday’s Boston Marathon has gone viral.
KSAT also learned the Marine, Staff Sergeant Jose Luis Sanchez, is from San Antonio. He has become an inspiration across the country.

Sanchez lost his leg after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan in 2011.
Sanchez came back home to undergo an intense recovery at Brooke Army Medical Center.
He ran his first marathon in 2015 in Washington, D.C. and the Boston Marathon last year.
This year he ran the marathon with the American flag on his shoulder as part of Team Semper Fi, according to the Boston Globe.
Sanchez also raised money for the Semper Fi Fund, an organization that provides financial assistance and support to families impacted by 9/11, as well as wounded military members and their families.
Last year, he finished the Boston Marathon in under six hours. This year, he ran the marathon in five hours, 21 minutes and 56 seconds.
