Boys and Girls Clubs of SA gets new clubhouse

Mays Family Clubhouse expected to serve 650 children

SAN ANTONIO – The Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday for a new state-of-the-art clubhouse.

The new 23,000-foot-square clubhouse is named the Mays Family Clubhouse and is located at 123 Ralph Street in the Lone Star neighborhood south of downtown.

The state-of-the-art clubhouse features tutoring, mentoring, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) classes and art and fitness activities.

"What this will do for the neighborhood is kids will have an opportunity after school and all day in summer to be in a safe space where they are really working on their academics, their characters and healthy lifestyles," Boys and Girls Clubs of San Antonio CEO Angie Mock said.

The clubhouse is expected to service more than 650 children, ages 6-18, District City Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales said.

The $4 million project was funded with $1.4 million from the city of San Antonio's 2012 Bond Program and $3.4 million in capital campaign contributions from the Mays Family Foundation, the Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation, and other benefactors.
