Facility dedicated to helping wounded veterans expands

Oasis for Warriors adds wheelchair accessibility, remodels bathrooms

PIPE CREEK, Texas – Oasis for Warriors helps provide services to injured veterans.

The facility in Pipe Creek allows organizations such as Paralyzed Veterans of America to bring veterans to the facility to practice archery.

"I was not living as healthier life as I should have. Getting involved with this gives you motivation," David Cromwell, a veteran, said.

Owner Bill Wilkinson said crews recently added some concrete for wheelchair accessibility and are remodeling the bathrooms.

"We have another 88 acres about 4 miles from here. And we want to do an amphitheater," Wilkinson said.

He said donations allow the facility to continue to provide healing for many veterans.

"One of the vets had told me that he felt I was on the right track. He said, 'You are getting us out at a place where we can see the sunsets, so you open up our sense of sights. We smell the barbecue, so you open up our sense of smell. We have music here in the amphitheater behind you, so you open up our sense of sound,'" Wilkinson said.

Jason Tabansky, 33, never imagined he would get a chance to participate in outdoor activities.

"I was in the military for 15 1/2 years. I was a helicopter repairman, and I got injured in September 2015," Wilkinson said.

Tabansky, who was a CH-47 flight crew instructor, said after joining the Paralyzed Veterans of America, he was back enjoying the outdoors at Oasis for Warriors.
