Man arrested, charged with murder in East Side shooting

Austin Menodoza charged in death of Jarvis Slack

SAN ANTONIO – Police have arrested a man they believe pulled the trigger and killed another man on the city’s East Side earlier this month.

According to an arrest affidavit, Austin Gustavo Mendoza killed Jarivs Dwayne Slack on July 6.

The shooting happened on Laura Jean Street shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Police found Slack dead with two gunshots wounds to the chest.

Officers said there were signs of a drug deal at the scene, including a large amount of marijuana found near Slack's body and a scale inside the home.

The day after the shooting, Mendoza and his girlfriend showed up at a friend’s house and told them about the crime, the affidavit said.

Police said Mendoza told his friend that he went to the home to rob Slack for Hydro marijuana and that he had the weapon “melted down.”

The suspect also changed at his friend’s house and left his clothes behind, the affidavit said. The clothing items were collected as evidence after the friend called police.
