SAN ANTONIO – The city of San Antonio has taken a step toward having what is left of a Northeast Side day care demolished.
Bright Kids Day Care, located in the 3900 block of Thousand Oaks, went up in flames Tuesday morning. The fire left the building heavily damaged.
Ximena Copa-Wiggins, a spokeswoman for the city’s Development Services department, said an affidavit was signed Wednesday morning, making way for the demolition of the remains. What remains unclear is exactly when the charred remains will be demolished, she said. She also did not know whether that project would be completed by the city or the property owner.
More than 60 children and nine staff members were inside when the fire erupted. All of them made it out safely.

A woman, who identified herself as “Heather K.,” said her son attended the school but happened to be at a doctor’s appointment at the time of the fire.
"Man, thank God he wasn't in there,” she said. “He's already, kind of, sick. He already has asthma and stuff like that. With that smoke, it could've been bad on him."
Heather was one of several parents who accepted the school’s offer to have their displaced children attend Bright Kids’ other location, on Clearspring Drive.

She said the move would be tough on her son.
"I told him, 'Let's just go see your friends. Your teachers are here so you should be OK," she said.
Zachary Long said he was shocked to hear about the fire. His older children used to attend the Thousand Oaks location.
He said in spite of the fire, he still believes day care is a safe option.
"You never know when there's going to be a fire,” he said. “There could be one here, or there could be one there. It really doesn't matter."

As of Wednesday morning, arson investigators still had not determined the cause of the fire. However, SAFD spokesman Woody Woodward said they did not believe it was suspicious.
