SAN ANTONIO – Families have been reunited with their children after a Northeast Side day care burned down in a devastating fire.
Officials with Bright Kids Daycare Center on Thousand Oaks near Wetmore Road said more than 60 students and staff members were evacuated before the building went up in flames.
Fire Department arson investigators said the fire is “under investigation, but not suspicious in nature.”
All of the children are safe, but the building is now in shambles.
Day care workers told parents to go to the center’s sister location to find their children. Parents waited for city buses to arrive with their children.
One man said he spent hours waiting for his 2 ½-year-old child. The child’s grandmother said the child was shaken up at first.
“She was a little freaked out when she first got off. When she saw her parents, she was much better,” said Roxanne Coy.
The building burned fast. Twenty-five units rushed to the scene to put out the blaze.
The San Antonio Fire Department credits quick action on the part of day care staff for the absence of injuries.
At first, everyone evacuated to a nearby apartment complex. VIA buses were then taken out of service for an emergency route to take the children to the center’s sister location.
Some parents and grandparents learned about the fire after calls from family and friends or watching the news.
“I was praying that they were fine, that they were OK, that they were actually listening,” said Denise Abrego, a grandmother of two children at the day care.
A day care staff member said the children attending the now-destroyed location can go to the center’s sister location from now on.
