Bexar County to create military transition center

Center to help military members with job placement, education, housing

SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County has allocated $250,000 in the county's budget for fiscal year 2017-2018 for a new military transition center.

"What it will be spent on is, we have an existing veterans service program that we are state-mandated to do. That already exists here. That will be revamping some of that, and for a new executive director that will come in," Bexar County Precinct 3 Commissioner Kevin Wolff said.

Wolff said it will cost around $1 million a year to operate the center.

"To start off with, the first piece will be integrating ourselves with the military existing out processing," Wolff said.

The department will be staffed with about 10 people who will contact outgoing members of the military six months before discharge to assist with job placement, education, housing, health and other needs.

"It's going to allow us to really focus on the estimated 2,200 service members who transition out of Joint Base San Antonio and are going to transition out of the Bexar County San Antonio area," Col. David Raugh, commander of the 502nd Force Support Group, said.

Raugh oversees the transition assistance program of all the military bases in San Antonio, and knows the influence military men and women have in the community.

"Veterans bring some great stuff to our nation, so a well-transitioned veteran brings leadership. They bring organization," he said.
