Woman shocked to learn she helped man accused of killing neighbor

Michael Robinson, 51, shot and killed during home invasion

UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas – She helped save the teen who killed her neighbor. Now a Universal City woman is remembering her neighbor as “wonderful man.”

Police said Jonathan Andrew Perales, 18, broke into a home in the 8400 block of Ulysses around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday when he was confronted by the home's owner, Michael Robinson.

Robinson, 51, grabbed his gun after his wife said she saw someone in their driveway. But by the time he armed himself, the alleged burglar was already near their bedroom.

Both Robinson and the 18-year-old fired shots at each other. Robinson was shot in his rib cage and was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center where he died. Perales was shot in the arm and upper chest and ran to get help a few houses away.

Kathy Carson's grandson opened the door and called for help. When police arrived the suspect still had a gun on him.

Carson said when the teen showed up at their door in the middle of the night, bleeding and asking for help.

“’I don’t’ want to die,’ that is all he said,” Carson said recounting the brief words the suspect spoke.

They didn't know what he had done to Robinson.

It wasn't until later that they found out that this same teen, just moments earlier, had shot and killed their neighbor during a home invasion.

"I'm horrified," Carson said. "I don't want to be non-Christian, but it should have been the other way around. Clay (Michael) Robinson was a wonderful, wonderful man with six children."

Police said Robinson's wife and their two teen children, who were in the home at the time, were not hurt.

Police were going door to door Tuesday morning looking for any surveillance video of the suspect.
They believe the suspect may have stolen items from neighbors as well. The suspect had been driving a stolen vehicle.

Police said that Perales is now recovering at SAMMC. When he is released he faces a capital murder charge.
