San Antonio professor drowns in Canyon Lake
Man was biology professor at Our Lady of the Lake University
CANYON LAKE, Texas – Cary Guffey has been identified as the man who drowned in Canyon Lake on Wednesday.
Guffey, 53, was a biology professor at Our Lady of the Lake University for more than 20 years, school officials said.
Witnesses reportedly saw Guffey flip out of his float at approximately 3:30 p.m. and not resurface, according to the Comal County Sheriff's Office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The following is a statement from OLLU President Diane E. Melby, Ed.D:
“The sudden loss of Dr. Cary Guffey leaves a tremendous hole in our community. We ask for prayers for the Guffey family and the entire OLLU family at this time. There has been a tremendous outpouring of love and support since we shared the news of Dr. Guffey’s passing. It is a testament to the type of professor he was and the impact that he had on his students and everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed.”
Funeral arrangements are underway and details will be shared when they become available.
This is the third reported drowning of a San Antonio resident in the last week.
