CPS crews head to Florida to help restore power for Irma victims

58 people in 28 trucks leave early Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO – CPS Energy crews are heading to Florida early Wednesday to help millions of people without power following Hurricane Irma.

58 people in 28 trucks leave at 6:15 a.m. and are heading to Jacksonville to help with the relief effort. The crews include mechanics, overhead linemen, management and safety personnel.

Once there the workers will disperse across Irma's path, a storm that had wind speeds that neared 130 mph.

The crews are slated to be gone one to two weeks, but could be gone as long as 21 days.

"Once we arrive, we could receive orders to help any area that's been devastated," John Moreno CPS spokesperson said. "So that's yet to be determined. But once we arrive, we'll know where we'll be helping out."

On Tuesday, crews performed a final inspection on vehicles and loaded them with necessary equipment.
