Knife-wielding suspect shot by police officer

Adrian Talamantez, 18, was trying to break into home, police say

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police shot and wounded an 18-year-old early Thursday morning who they say had a knife and made a threatening move toward an officer.

Police originally were called to the 14400 block of Briarpine for a reported disturbance, but they said the call was upgraded to a man with a knife.

When officers arrived around midnight, they said they found the suspect, Adrian Talamantez, in the front yard of a home, trying to break in.

"He reportedly had been low-crawling around the house," said Chief William McManus with SAPD.

In a briefing with the media soon after the shooting, McManus said Talamantez appeared to be under the influence of something and was uncooperative.

"The suspect started moving toward the officer," he said. "At one point, the officer fired three rounds. The suspect was struck once in the side."

Talamantez was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment. His wound was not believed to be life threatening.

No one else was hurt.

Talamantez has been charged with aggravated assault against public servant. His bond is set at $75,000.

McManus said the officer who fired the shots is a four year veteran of the police department.  He has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation.
