Families escape, cat dies, during North Side apartment fire

Investigators still looking for cause of fire

SAN ANTONIO – Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that damaged or destroyed seven units at a North Side apartment complex.

The fire broke out after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Mediterranean Villas Apartments, sending residents of on building out into the street.

Firefighters say it appears to have started in a second floor unit of the building, located in the 1500 block of Jackson-Keller Road.

A woman told KSAT 12 News she lived in that apartment and has no idea what caused the fire.

She said her smoke detectors did not work, but, thankfully, the smell of smoke woke her up.

The woman and her family escaped safely, although she says her pet cat died in the fire.

Firefighters said seven of the eight apartments in the building were left with damage from either the fire, smoke or water.

In all, 15 people have been displaced, they said.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross showed up at the scene and assisted at least some of the people in finding another place to stay.
