BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A man who was previously accused of first-degree murder is guilty on a lesser charge Monday in a Bexar County courtroom, according to the District Attorney’s office.
A jury determined Israel Anthony Cortez, 28, killed his friend Robert Neaves, 25, in a fatal 2023 stabbing. Cortez was sentenced to 40 years in state prison and is guilty of second-degree manslaughter, the DA’s office said.

Three years ago, KSAT reported Cortez called 911 to tell police that his friend showed up to his house with a stab wound in his chest and injuries to his face. Neaves was taken to a local hospital where he would later be pronounced dead.
In 2023, Police said Cortez denied being with Neaves before the incident.
That evening and the following day, San Antonio police said two people called the authorities and said Cortez admitted to stabbing Neaves during a fight. The DA’s office said he confessed to his mother about the stabbing.
A witness told investigators that Cortez described the stabbing as accidental, the DA’s office said.
