Knife-wielding man shot in officer-involved shooting at SW Side apartment

Officer-involved shooting occurred at Crestwood Apartments

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on the city's Southwest Side near Lackland Air Force Base.

The report of the shooting came in just before 11:30 a.m. in the 5900 block of Royalgate Drive, and emergency medical services were called to the area.

Chief William McManus said two officers responded to the Crestwood Apartments for a disturbance call with reports of yelling and screaming in an apartment.

When the officers arrived and knocked on the door of an apartment, a man opened it holding a butcher knife.

McManus said the officers backed off to give him room, but the man advanced toward them leading to one of the officers firing his weapon. He said the unidentified man was the only one in the apartment and was cursing at the officers during the altercation.

The man is believed to be in his 50s and was shot twice in the chest and groin area. After being shot, McManus said the man retreated inside the apartment where the officers administered first aid.

The man was initially transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but McManus said he is now stable. He said officers have been called to the apartment in the past for the same reports of the man.

McManus said per department policy on officer-involved shooting, the officer will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
