Man wanted on felony warrants critically wounded in officer-involved shooting

Brief chase ends in crash, shooting in 200 block of Chevy Chase Drive

SAN ANTONIO – A 32-year-old man who was wanted on three felony warrants was critically wounded in an officer-involved shooting Monday morning on the city's Northeast Side.

San Antonio police spokesman Officer Doug Greene said the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force got word that John Carlos Alvear, who was considered dangerous, was at a motel around 9:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of Austin Highway.

When the Task Force tried to round up Alvear, who Greene said had a run-in with police Friday, he jumped into a car and led law enforcement officers on a brief chase. At one point, the suspect rammed his car into one of the officers' vehicles, Greene said.

The chase ended when Alvear crashed his vehicle into the front yard of a home in the 200 block of Chevy Chase Drive.

Moments later when Alvear appeared to be reaching for something, three members of the Task Force opened fire on him, hitting him multiple times, Greene said. Alvear was taken to a San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

Scott Isaac, who lives in the neighborhood, said he had just sat down to watch TV when the incident unfolded.

"I just heard a bunch of tires squeal, and I ran outside and the cops were chasing a Charger, and they ran off on the neighbor's lawn and did a bunch of doughnuts and pinned him in there," he said.

Greene said it's not known if Alvear was armed.

Although the shooting involved Task Force deputy marshals, the San Antonio Police Department is the leading agency in the investigation.

Alvear was wanted on warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, evading arrest and assault of a family member.
